Abbaye (in rabbinic texts always without the title Rav) was one of the leading scholars in the fourth generation of Babylonian Amoraim, active in the early 4th century in Pumbedita. He grew up as an orphan and was educated by his uncle Rabbah bar Naḥmani and Rav Joseph, then the leading scholar at Pumbedita.
