Born in Lisbon, Abarbanel (1437–1508) spent most of his life in Portugal, nearly a decade in Spain prior to Spanish Jewry’s expulsion in 1492, and the rest of his years in several Italian centers, eventually passing away in Venice. His commentaries on the Torah, Prophets, and Daniel conclude the celebrated tradition of medieval Hispano-Jewish scriptural interpretation and at times inaugurate a novel humanistically inflected turn in Hebrew biblical scholarship.…
