Jovis and Birkhäuser join forces

January 29, 2019

Jovis and Birkhäuser, two renowned publishers specializing in architecture, have joined forces to expand their existing publishing programs and to increase geographic and topical reach.

Jovis Verlag, founded in 1995 in Berlin, cooperates closely with international academic partners, cultural and business institutions as well as individual experts to publish approximately 60 new titles annually in the areas of urban studies and design, architecture, landscape architecture, historic preservation, contemporary art and photography. Among the current 500 titles in print are several works that influence current discussions in architecture such as those about new models of living, interacting with post-War Modernism or bottom-up strategies in urban development.

Birkhäuser, founded in 1879 and part of De Gruyter since 2012, is one of the leading publishers in architecture, design and landscape architecture. Birkhäuser publishes over 100 must-have new titles every year, including those by key authors and architects such as Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, Andrea Deplazes, Herzog & de Meuron and Peter Zumthor.

Within the context of the cooperation, De Gruyter has acquired Jovis Verlag from its publisher and founder Jochen Visscher, who will remain closely involved as an advisor both to Jovis and to De Gruyter, which will continue to expand its arts and architecture program.

Doris Kleilein, an experienced architect and journalist, has been Editorial Director at Jovis Verlag since May 2018, and will maintain this position going forward. She will work closely with her new colleagues Ulrich Schmidt (Editorial Director Birkhäuser) and Pipa Neumann (Editorial Director Arts / Deutscher Kunstverlag). Jovis Verlag will remain at its current offices at Kurfürstenstrasse 15/16 in Berlin and the brand will be maintained and strengthened.

"I am very pleased that Jovis, which I founded 25 years ago, will continue to stand on solid ground. Together with Birkhäuser, we will continue to shape the future not only by embracing synergies, but also by maintaining both strong brands and the high quality publications that have made their names,” said Jochen Visscher, Jovis’ founder and De Gruyter advisor.

“Urban development and architecture are central to current public discussions, and participation in them should involve more than just professionals. In the future, Jovis will concentrate even more closely on these key subjects and will sharpen the focus of the publishing program. Jovis will continue to produce individually crafted books which are developed closely with their authors, and we will also develop new digital formats,” said Doris Kleilein, Editorial Director Jovis at De Gruyter.

“We are both pleased and proud that Jovis and Birkhäuser will stand shoulder to shoulder as two strong publishing houses with a passion for architecture. We look forward not only to a joint and complementary publishing program, but also to a ramp-up in creativity thanks to our new colleagues at Jovis. We are also delighted that Jochen Visscher will continue to support us as an advisor,” said Till Meinert, Vice President Professionals at De Gruyter. “Our cooperation with Jovis clearly demonstrates our growth strategy in architecture and we are looking forward to the expansion and growth of the program.”
